Its been a long time coming…
INTRODUCING RBR APPALOOSAS
Our breeding story began more than 30 years ago with a little girl who loved to catalog the natural world around her. Birds, wildflowers, horses — if it could be observed, it could be organized. I spent hours charting horse breeds, heights, disciplines, and colors, carefully filling notebooks as if I were mapping the world one detail at a time. At the time, I chalked up my insatiable curiosity and need for order as just an offbeat childhood habit. Looking back, it was the foundation of everything to come.
At ten years old, I met my first Appaloosa. Her name was Montana — a bay snowcap lesson horse with a stubborn streak a mile wide. She broke my foot. Naturally, I decided right then and there that I absolutely did not like Appaloosas. Life, as it turns out, has a sense of humor.
More than twenty years later, I find myself living in the state of Montana, surrounded by spots, raising the very breed I once swore off. The irony is not lost on me.
I’ve always been drawn to beautiful things — and to things that challenge me. If I’d known then that a broken foot would spark a lifelong passion and fire for this incredible breed, I might have paid closer attention to the lesson she was teaching me.
Why Appaloosas?
Appaloosas aren’t everyone’s favorite breed, and I understand why. They’re loud — and not just because of their color. Nine out of ten Appaloosas I’ve known have big personalities. They’re curious, comical, intelligent, and deeply loyal. They also have a reputation for being headstrong — a trait I can’t say I mind. I don’t shy away from a horse with an opinion.
What truly sets Appaloosas apart is their versatility. You’ll find them excelling across nearly every discipline — from family horses to rope horses, cow ponies, jumpers, and endurance partners. Their hearts are enormous, and once you’ve earned their respect, that headstrong streak transforms into trust. From there, it becomes loyalty — the kind that doesn’t quit when things get hard.
At Roaming Bird Ranch, we don’t just breed Appaloosas for their beauty or their spots. We breed them for their minds, their hearts, and their willingness to meet life head-on. Because the right horse doesn’t just carry you — it challenges you, teaches you, and stays with you for the long haul.
RBR Flashn Solar Fires “Apollo”
Our Young Sire
Excellent Breeding. Exceptionally Minded.
Apollo is a striking blend of proven foundation lines and modern performance breeding — a young stallion with presence, purpose, and an undeniable zest for life. While still early in his journey, Apollo has already proven himself worthy of the opportunity to step into our breeding program.
What sets Apollo apart is his mind. He approaches his work with curiosity, willingness, and intelligence that makes training feel seamless. This year, after being paired with a trainer that truly “gets” him, he has shown us an impressive ability to retain what he learns, adapt to new challenges, and meet each day with a steady, willing attitude. He is thoughtful without being dull, energetic without being reactive — a balance we value deeply.
Apollo’s pedigree supports both versatility and durability, combining lines known for soundness, trainability, and heart. He represents the kind of stallion we believe in: one that not only looks the part, but carries the mind and work ethic to back it up.

Lettuce
The Wild Card
Meet Lettuce. Yes… that’s her registered name.
Lettuce came into our lives the way the best horses often do — completely unplanned. A friend sent us her Facebook listing, and while we had absolutely no intention of buying a horse that day, life had other ideas. She quite literally fell into our lap, and we’re grateful it did.
Behind the unexpected introduction is a mare with serious quality. Lettuce is beautifully bred and has already proven herself in the show pen, placing well at regional shows and earning National points in Foundation Pedigree Designation — not bad for a “random horse from Facebook.”
What truly sets Lettuce apart, though, is who she is. She is intelligent, willing, and exceptionally kind — the kind of horse that meets you with soft eyes and an eager heart. There’s a quiet magic about her, and everyone who meets Lettuce seems to fall under her spell.
Her pedigree speaks for itself, featuring notable names such as Mighty Bright, Prince Plaudit, Te N Te, Goer, Joker B,and Bright Eyes Brother — a lineage rich in versatility, heart, and proven performance.
Lettuce is a reminder that sometimes the best horses aren’t planned — they’re found. And when they are, they leave a lasting mark.

Rivendells Hidden Velvet
Grace in Motion
Velvet is the kind of horse you don’t forget. She was for sale for a long time, and every so often I’d find myself going back, checking to see if she was still available. There was just something about her — an unspoken pull I couldn’t ignore. In the end, she was a horse I simply couldn’t quit.
Her breeding is different from much of what we have on the ranch, and that difference is exactly what makes her special. Velvet brings incredible size and substance to the table — she has massive bone, enormous feet, and a strength that’s immediately apparent the moment you see her. Paired with that power is a sharp, intelligent mind and what I can only describe as a sparkly personality. She’s bright, curious, confident, with a presence that fills the space around her.
At just four years old, Velvet is already a titan of a horse, and she’s only just beginning to show us who she will become. Under saddle, her movement is breathtaking — effortless, balanced, and fluid. She doesn’t just move… she floats.
Hidden within her DNA are subtle Appaloosa characteristics, waiting to reveal themselves in time. We’re incredibly excited to watch Velvet grow, mature, and step into her full potential. She’s a horse that promises both power and elegance — and one we believe will leave a lasting mark on our program.

Willows Good Fortune “Fortune”
One lucky Lady
Fortune is exactly what her name suggests — a little bit of luck wrapped up in spots. She’s a flashy two-year-old red leopard with a presence that turns heads and a personality that keeps them close.
Despite her young age, Fortune has already made her mark in the show pen, earning regional placings and points in Most Colorful. While her coat may be what catches your eye first, it’s her mind that truly sets her apart. She is quiet, calm, and naturally curious — the kind of young horse who approaches new situations with thoughtfulness rather than worry.
Fortune has shown an exceptional ability to learn quickly, advancing through her training with ease and confidence. She’s willing, attentive, and eager to please, making every step forward feel natural and rewarding.
And when the work is done, Fortune is all heart. She absolutely loves a good butt scratch and will happily back herself right into your hands for grooming — a small detail that says everything about the kind of horse she is.
Fortune is a junior mare with both flash and substance, and we’re excited to watch her continue to grow into her future.
RBR Stars Silver Lining “Sterling”
The golden child
Sterling’s story began in the quiet, fragile hours before dawn on June 4th — a moment marked by both heartbreak and hope. Her arrival was traumatic, and in the process, we lost her mother. Yet somehow, against every odd, Sterling chose to stay.
From the instant her hooves touched the ground, she was perfect. Strong and sweet. Smart and willing. There was an undeniable determination in her — an unshakable will to live that carried her forward from the very beginning.
Sterling continued to defy the odds in every possible way. Even her color tells a story of rarity and resilience — she carries genetics with only a 1.17% probability: EE aa LP/LP Patn. A true statistical miracle, written into her very being.
Day by day, Sterling grew stronger. Each morning brought more confidence, more spunk, more beauty. She met the world with curiosity and courage, improving in ways that felt nothing short of miraculous. Watching her thrive has been both humbling and deeply moving.
Sterling is everything we could have ever dreamed of, and more. She carries her mother’s spirit within her — a living silver lining born from loss, resilience, and love. She is a reminder that even in the hardest moments, something extraordinary can emerge.
HH Evening Star
In Loving Memory of HH Evening Star
HH Evening Star was the kind of horse that comes along once in a lifetime. She was, without question, the smartest and most patient horse I have ever known — steady, gentle, and endlessly kind. From the very beginning, she carried herself with quiet grace, and she stayed true to that nature until the very end.
In her final moments, she gave everything she had to her filly. Her calm demeanor, her steadiness, and her unwavering strength played a vital role in Sterling’s survival. She gave more than we will ever fully understand — a gift of life, courage, and calm that continues to live on through her daughter.
Eve was exceptionally bred and absolutely stunning, but her greatest beauty was found in who she was. By every measure, she was an extraordinary mother — patient, present, and selfless.
Though she is no longer with us, her spirit remains. It lives in Sterling’s strength, in her kindness, and in the quiet moments when we are reminded of just how much one horse can give. HH Evening Star will always be remembered, deeply loved, and forever honored.
